Established in July 1985 with a construction cost of $4.5 million, the jail was funded through Proposition 4 and had an original capacity of 108 inmates. When Auburn Correctional Facility was under the contract system in the mid-1800s, several companies in Auburn contracted out their labor to the correctional facility to cut down on the price of manufacturing.
